What is Hermeneutics Class?

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022

“Hermeneutics refers to the art and science of properly interpreting Scripture. Since students surveyed the Old Testament (7th grade) and New Testament (8th grade), the next step in ninth grade is to begin equipping students to study the Bible themselves. So we begin with some first principles: What do inspiration and inerrancy mean? What is the canon, and how did we get it? Answering those questions defines the edges of the canvas as students begin thinking about the basic building blocks of communication: words, sentences, paragraphs, discourses, whole books. We will also consider the world beyond the text and think about how historical and cultural assumptions can or should influence interpretation.”

The community to whom the Scriptures are given is a worshiping community, and one of the characteristics of a people led and empowered by the Spirit is singing. At the beginning of each period for Hermeneutics, we are singing hymns. This can be a rich and encouraging experience!” -Justin Keller
