Meet the Curious Historian

Monday, October 3rd, 2022

You may not know much about Dr. Aaron Larsen who works behind the scenes advising on curriculum and research at Regents (in addition to teaching Latin I this year!), but if you’ve had children in 4th to 8th grade, you’ve probably seen his work. Dr. Larsen (affectionately known by the students as “Doc”) is the author of Latin for Children used by Latin A through C in the Grammar School and The Art of Argument (used by logic classes in 7th and 8th grades). He is also one of the founders of Classical Academic Press which was started to produce better Latin and logic curriculum for the classical education movement. The motto of the Press is “classical subjects creatively taught.”

When Dr. Larsen is not in the classroom, he can be found working on a big project: The Curious Historian, a six-book history curriculum for upper Grammar School and Logic School. “I really felt like we need a world history text that was more detailed and feature-rich and yet also more systematic than the two main classical options right now,” says Dr. Larsen. So far volumes 1A (The Early and Middle Bronze Ages), 1B (The Late Bronze and Iron Ages), and 2C (Greece and the Classical World) have been published, with three more books in developments, which are all slated to be released next year.

“This was a project that I envisioned 14 years ago, before I even came to Regents,” says Dr. Larsen. “But it's been my favorite writing project so far because I’ve had the opportunity to work with my mother as the co-author.” His mother, Mrs. Claire Larsen is a biblical Counselor who wrote God’s Great Covenant, the Bible curriculum that the Grammar School uses. “The Curious Historian is the best of both worlds,” says Dr. Larsen. “It combines the details and depth with story and layout that make it more kid friendly.” His most enjoyable volume to write so far is about the Roman period, which will be released next spring.
