REGENTS' FIRST SCHOOL NURSE!

Monday, September 26th, 2022

Regents is thrilled to welcome Katy Shonka as our first school nurse. While she may be new to the role of school nurse, Mrs. Shonka is neither new to Regents nor new to nursing. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Virginia and has worked in post-surgical and oncology units of the hospital as well as a volunteer nurse at Thrive Pregnancy Center in Charlottesville. Mrs. Shonka has been a part of the Regents community for 11 years now and all four of her children-- Ainsley, David, Luke, and Jack-- attend Regents. Her oldest, Ainsley, is in 11th grade and is on track to be the first-ever Regents graduate who attended the school since kindergarten.

The Shonkas have also been foster parents to four children over the years, with one current foster child. “I am excited to be Regents’ nurse,” says Mrs. Shonka. “As a parent of children with severe food allergies, I know how important it is to have a well-organized nurse’s station and someone who is well-prepared to handle emergencies!” Mrs. Shonka also has plenty of experience mending minor playground scrapes, attending to hurting tummies – and everything in between. “My goal is for parents—especially those whose kids may have some health concerns--to feel confident that Regents is equipped and their children are in good hands,” says Mrs. Shonka.
