Sixth grade is hard at work on their autobiographies. "I love this project," says teacher Megan Maley. "It is an opportunity in the last year of childhood to reflect on their lives. It is a lot of work but has a gravitas that makes it significant to the children - for many of them it's their best work of the year." One of the goals of sixth grade at Regents is to learn the skill of writing a five paragraph essay. Each chapter of the autobiography is a five paragraph essay that has a different skill focus and incorporates a different stylistic technique. The last chapter is on the students' dreams for their future. "I encourage them to think broadly about this; it's not just what job do they want but who they want to be as a person. I challenge them to think about the gifts and talents and desires they have now and how God might be directing and using those things." |
