Rock Watson Joins Regents School

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA- Regents School of Charlottesville is pleased to announce Rock Watson will become their first Varsity Girls Basketball coach.  Watson has been coaching basketball in the Charlottesville area for more than ten years.  His love for the game goes back to his own playing days at The University of North Texas and the United States Army (Armed Forces Team).  Coach Watson has been affiliated with the Virginia Basketball Academy (VABA) for the past ten years as their Assistant Director, Summer Camp Director and individual basketball instructor. Most recently, Coach Watson has been the Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach for The Covenant School.

Travis Johnson, Athletic Director for Regents School of Charlottesville, is thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside  Coach Watson once again.  “Coach Watson is a great coach, but more importantly he is a faithful man that serves others.  I have known Rock for ten plus years now and he is the perfect person to lay the foundation for our Varsity girls team at Regents School.”

Johnson’s vision of expanding the girl’s basketball program to the next level will be realized with Watson whose coaching style matches the foundations based program already in place at Regents.  In reference to the upcoming change, Watson stated, "It's a blessing, honor and privilege to have the opportunity to build a program from the ground up. I'm thankful for the Regents School, Courtney Palumbo and Travis Johnson for entrusting in me to bring a high level of integrity, character and spiritual development to the student athletes in the girl's basketball program."

Regents School began an athletics program in the Fall of 2013 under the tutelage of our first Athletic Director, Doug Smethurst.  Johnson took over the reins from Coach Smethurst in the Fall of 2015.  What began as a middle school basketball program is quickly developing into a competitive middle school and junior varsity athletic program in cross country, volleyball, basketball, track and tennis.  Coach Watson and Coach Johnson have plans for the girl’s program to expand the athletics program into varsity sports in the areas of basketball and volleyball this Fall.  The addition of Coach Watson is an important step in this direction.  Additionally, Regents has recently joined the Virginia Association of Christian Athletes (VACA).   Coach Johnson is looking forward to the opportunities for competitive play that will be provided by Regents’ association with VACA.

Regents School of Charlottesville is a K-12 classical Christian school located at 3045 Ivy Road in the Christian Aid Mission Building.  Regents is founded upon and informed by a biblical worldview that equips our students to know, love, and practice that which is true, good, and excellent and challenges them to live purposefully and intelligently as servants of the Lord Jesus Christ for the benefit of man and the glory of God.  We currently serve 140 students from Charlottesville and the surrounding counties.  For more information regarding our school, please refer to our website at www.regents-school.org.
